LIVING MEMORY LAB PROJECT

REFLECT, RESPOND, REMEMBER

Make your own film

about slavery or abolition...

Express your thoughts in a short film and help the community learn more about our shared slaving heritage.

Plymouth and District Racial Equality Council is running a new and exciting project supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund. Living Memory Lab is a partnership between P&DREC, BBC South West and Creative Partnerships and has been launched to mark ten years of the Respect Festival.

The project which will run for eighteen months is offering a hundred members of the public the opportunity to make a three-minute film to mark the Bicentenary of the Act to abolish slavery. You don't need any film-making experience but very basic knowledge of using a computer is desirable. Living Memory Lab is running a series of four-day short courses in basic film-making absolutely free. At the end of the four days everyone will produce a short film.

All you need is an idea! It may be that your family has it's own slaving heritage which you want remembered or you may be interested in making a film about one of the heroes of abolition like Equiano. If you have been to Ghana you may want to talk about the slaving forts or local historians may want to discuss the role of Drake and Hawkins in Plymouth's slaving heritage. Those interested in modern slavery can also get involved too. As long as the subject for your film is connected with slavery or abolition...

JOIN OUR COURSE, YOU DON'T NEED ANY PREVIOUS FILM MAKING EXPERIENCE JUST A DESIRE TO EXPRESS HOW YOU FEEL ABOUT SLAVERY.

To make your own film about slavery or abolition contact me - Fiona Evans. You can email me on fiona.evans@bbc.co.uk or contact the BBC Radio Devon Action Desk on 01752 255500.

 ...20 Volunteer Trainers needed...

Your job will be to support the project coordinator over a four day course. You will be expected to attend a free four-day course first and make your own short film and then commit four days to helping others produce their own mini movie.

Most training courses will run from Monday to Thursday but there will be courses run over weekends and evenings too. In total we are looking for an eight day commitment from passionate individuals who are competent at using a computer. All volunteers will be taught the basics of film editing using AVID XPRESS PRO and camera techniques for beginners.
