Year on year, Plymouth Flavour Fest has been growing in popularity amongst both local residents and visitors to the region. With over 120 of the region’s best food producers taking part, Flavour Fest 2007 promised to be a culinary extravaganza not to be missed—and that was definitely true this year. Over 100,000 people attend this bustling and exceptional three-day event, and media interest was high. Once again the Piazza was turned into a bustling continental-style market, full of colour and the smells of delicious food being prepared. If that wasn’t enough to tempt your taste buds, the cookery theatre hosting demonstrations by local and nationally acclaimed chefs—and there was even a Kids Cookery area. The newly added World Cuisine area - pegged as the chance to taste the world in Plymouth— offered delicious dishes with recipes originating from around the globe, adding even more colour, flavour and aromas to the already hugely successful Plymouth City Flavour Fest event. Along with the established local businesses who have attended in previous years, the world Cuisine areas has opened up even more culinary delights with specialities from Russia, Thailand, India, Africa, the Caribbean and Europe – just to name a few. This exciting new addition was thanks to sponsorship from Plymouth City Council, and a partnership between Business Link and Plymouth and District Racial Equality Council, who scoured the South West to promote the inclusion of more exotic dishes and food providers – focusing on World Dishes and Black and Minority Ethnic Communities. The aim of the event was to promote the wonderful diversity of people we have in the region, and the positive benefits they bring both culturally and economically to the local community. Julie Paget, Race Development Worker said “To accompany the culinary aspects of this event, we have organised a vibrant treat in the way of traditional cultural performances and workshops, aimed at the whole family, and which are to be held in the Business Link marquee by the sundial.” Zoe Campbell, Manager at the Plymouth & District Racial Equality Council “We are pleased to be working alongside local restaurants and businesses connected to the food industry to create this wonderful area dedicated to the pleasures of world cuisine. This is the first time that such an event has happened in Plymouth and it has highlighted the enormous diversity of cultural food available on our doorstep. Although the South West is best known for its pasties, fish and chips and clotted cream, it is good to know that there is a much bigger choice of delicious food available” Business link were, and are, keen to promote enterprise amongst ethnic minority communities and have taken the lead in this through a number of initiatives across the two counties over the last two years. One of these initiatives was the area devoted to world cuisine, showing all aspects of ethnic food production in the region, from field to fork, along with ethnic and cultural activities in a dedicated marquee throughout the three days of the festival.
