            YOUTH CAFE – FREEDOM FIELDS

DO YOU WANT TO TRY AND MAKE A DIFFERENCE TO THE LIVES OF YOUNG PEOPLE IN MUTLEY, GREENBANK AND SURROUNDING AREAS?

VOLUNTEERING OPPORTUNITIES

The Youth Cafe is a partnership project between the Mutley Greenbank Trust, Plymouth MIND, Westcountry Housing Association and other organisations.  It is situated in the Cafe In The Park in Freedom Fields.  It opens on a Friday evening from 7.30pm to 10.30pm for young people aged 11 – 21.  A young Greenbank resident has recently successfully applied for funding from the Youth Opportunity Fund and Youth Capital Fund.  This money has bought a pool table, a Nintendo Wii, a flatscreen TV, a soundsystem, CD decks, a professional standard coffee machine and a professional standard smoothie maker.  Money is still available to buy new tables and chairs, sofas, musical instruments and computers.  There is also money available to develop the catering side of the project, to provide training for young people and to decorate the Youth Cafe.  The Youth Cafe is staffed by the Mutley Greenbank Trust Youth Area Coordinator, qualified Youth Workers, students on placements and volunteers. Volunteers are needed to assist in the provision of food and drinks, befriend and act as positive role models to young people and help develop the project.  This is an ideal opportunity for people wanting to get into Youth Work or Community Work.  Volunteers will receive ongoing support and training.  References and CRB checks are essential.

Could you be a volunteer on a criminal justice scrutiny panel?
Based on the 2007 pilot in Torbay, The Devon and Cornwall Local Criminal Justice Board is setting up a scrutiny panel to review randomly selected, finalised racially and/or religiously aggravated crime case files.  We are now looking for expressions of interest from members of the public who are from black or minority ethnic (BME) communities living in Devon and Cornwall to join the panel.

The opinions, suggestions and even criticisms of independent, external sources are an important part of helping organisations to develop and improve.

The LCJB and criminal justice agencies are committed to improving the criminal justice services and outcomes affecting BME people.

The scrutiny panel will work closely with the board on a number of important activities, including:

  • Preparing reports for the LCJB that will focus on how well these cases have been handled, particularly relating to the services provided for victims and witnesses
  • Suggesting ways that the service provided for victims and witnesses could be improved

The scrutiny panels will provide communities with an opportunity to speak to the agencies, whilst addressing issues about accountability and transparency of decision-making within the criminal justice system.

This is an unpaid role, however, expenses will be reimbursed at an appropriate level and will be decided on an individual basis.

The successful candidates will be required to undertake the following work:

  • Attendance at relevant training sessions (approx. 4 sessions)
  • Attendance at the scrutiny panel (x2 days)
  • Review and scrutiny of finalised racially aggravated or religiously aggravated case files
  • Feedback to the criminal justice agencies on how services can be improved

This piece of work is for occasional panels throughout the year. You will be supported by the LCJB member agencies and Support Team.

We hope you will agree that this is an important and innovative piece of work, which we see as a positive step towards improving criminal justice services across Devon and Cornwall. We welcome your response and look forward to hearing from you.

We plan to hold informal interviews with prospective panel members in October 2008. If you are interested please complete an application form available from either 01392 452060, lcjb2@devonandcornwall.pnn.police.uk or www.dclcjb.org.uk (click on link on the home page).

Completed application forms need to be with us by 30 September 2008. For an informal chat please contact either Hannah Hart on 07736083601 or Elliot Perkins at The Monitoring Group on 01803 203525.

Plymouth Youth Offending Service is recruiting people of all ages, backgrounds and walks of life to work with young people in a variety of voluntary roles in a youth justice setting. We have immediate opportunities for people interested in supporting and advising young people in police custody, or working in a mentoring capacity.    Full training will be provided – a total of five days – so no previous experience or qualifications are necessary, and all expenses will be reimbursed. Previous convictions will not necessarily preclude someone from volunteering with us, although we are required to carry out a full criminal records check. This is an excellent opportunity for anyone with an interest in social, community or youth work, criminal justice or law. If you are a good communicator, patient, enthusiastic and committed to supporting and nurturing young people, we would really like to hear from you. To find out more or to register your interest, please ring Plymouth Youth Offending Service on (01752) 306999 and ask to speak to Paul Dixon, alternatively, e-mail paul.dixon@plymouth.gov.uk. This exciting new project aims to increase the skills of practitioners working with parents of children 1-3 who are at risk of learning delay, by supporting them to get involved in their children’s learning.  FREE training is available across the country.  Parenting UK is rolling out three strands of training for the workforce.  The training will up-skill workers to introduce the parents to strategies and methods of promoting early learning or children aged 1-3.  Who can undertake this training?  Early years practitioners, local parents and others who wish to work with parents of children aged 1-3 around the parenting relationship and others who are interested in this work.  We are particularly keen to recruit men and trainees from black and minority ethnic communities.
